An adjustment is a gentle force introduced into the spine intended to release a vertebral segment from its abnormal motion and/or position thereby reducing the vertebral subluxation. The doctor applies pressure to the bone and "unlocks" it from its improper position. The bone will then be free to align itself correctly. The chiropractor will free up the vertebrae so the body can do its job and put them back in the correct position. This treatment works for many joint, muscle and nerve conditions and is completely safe. Such vertebral subluxations are caused by injury, poor posture, improper lifting habits, wear and tear, and many other causes. A chiropractic adjustment is the most conservative approach to a health issue and should precede other forms of treatment which can always be utilized if should an adjustment fail.
